Licensed Addiction Counselor

The following outlines general licensing information. For specific information on filing an application, you will need to obtain the application which includes a detailed listing of the requirements.

A. Application Fee:

$200.00

B. Education Requirements:

1. A baccalaureate degree in alcohol and drug studies, psychology, sociology, social work, counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university; or

2. An associate of arts degree in alcohol and drug studies, chemical dependency, or substance abuse from an accredited institution

3. All education requirements must include 270 contact hours of specific chemical dependency and counseling courses. These are contact hours that may be obtained through academic course work, approved workshop training or approved home study courses.

C. Experience Requirements:

Prior to beginning the examination process, each person shall complete 1000 hours of supervised chemical dependency counseling experience in a chemical dependency treatment program.

D. Examination Information:

1. Competency examination is a written exam. Written examinations are administered three times per year. Applicants for licensure have three opportunities or 18 months to successfully pass the examination.

2. Written Exam Fee: $135.00

E. Renewal Period:

Renew annually by June 30

F. Renewal Fee:

$150.00

G. Continuing Education Requirements:

20 hours annually of continuing education

H. Other Special License Requirements:

Renewal late fee $300.00
