The purpose of elevator permits, and inspections is to provide safety standards for the design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration and repair of elevators, dumbwaiters, escalators, and inclined lifts, moving walks and their hoist ways. A state permit is required for all elevator, dumbwaiter, escalator and lift installations and modifications.

When making application for elevator installation or alteration please include layout drawings showing dimensions of the machine room, detail of new equipment being placed and a summary of the work being performed. Your submission must demonstrate that the work being done is compliant with the currently adopted code. If you submit deficient information you will be asked to provide additional information prior to the permit being issued.
Drawings must demonstrate compliance with seismic requirements based on the seismic design category shown on the Seismic Design Categories Map. If seismic design category listed on submitted drawings do not match seismic design category for default soil (site class D) then a Geotechnical report will be required.

Elevator permit holders must contact the inspector for an inspection of initial installation or alteration once complete. Please allow a minimum of ten working days prior to the anticipated date for placing the conveyance in use. The installation must meet the requirements of the currently adopted elevator code.
The units included are passenger elevators, freight elevators, escalators, and moving walks in public places. Passenger and freight elevator safety inspections are required for all elevators. Following the annual safety inspection, the correction of any deficiencies found during inspection and the payment of the elevator certificate of inspection fee the owner and/or user of the elevator will be issued an ELEVATOR OPERATING CERTIFICATE which authorizes the elevator to be operated until the next date of inspection.
A licensed elevator contractor is required for installation or modification of elevators and repairs to an elevator or lift require a licensed elevator mechanic. You can find information regarding elevator licensure on the program’s webpage.
ARM 24.301.610 - ACCIDENTS requires an owner or lessee aware of the accident to report to the department anytime a conveyance is involved in an accident causing injury or death. The owner or lessee has 72 hours in which they must submit a written report to the department. The department will inspect the conveyance involved in the accident, and if necessary, require corrective action. An inspection fee will be charged.
